Traffic Department declares bounty on arsonists

Update : 23 Apr 2013, 12:12 PM

Traffic Department of Dhaka Metropolitan Police has declared bounty to the brave taxicab drivers for catching red-handed the arsonists setting fire to vehicles during hartal hours.

But the move of the traffic department remains unknown even to its high-ups.

A banner to this end with some safety guidelines were seen hanging in front of Nilkhet Police Box in the capital yesterday morning, but the amount of bounty was not mentioned there.

A total of five directives were stated in the banner including not carrying any suspected passengers in the taxicab and not stopping the vehicle without the destination.

The drivers were also asked to be cautious while going to a remote place on hire.

“Please keep an eye through your looking glass if anyone follows you and if so, please dial the numbers,” read the banner.

The directive also suggested keeping fire extinguishing equipment in the cab.

Four cell phone numbers of Traffic Control Room were also displayed there for contact.

But when this correspondent dialed the numbers, the traffic control authorities said they had no idea about the initiatives.

Duty officer Fazlur Rahman of traffic control room picked up the phone.

He said: “We were not given any instructions on the matter.”

“Please contact New Market police station. I think they know the matter,” said the duty officer.

Asked about it, New Market police station’s Officer-in-Charge Mostafizur Rahman said they know nothing about the bounty.

“I think traffic department will know as they hung the banner,” he said.

Contacted, Mili Biswas, additional commissioner of traffic department said, “I can’t say anything without seeing the banner. But a banner like that has been made. I don’t know whether those were made for all the divisions.”

Deputy Commissioner (DC) South of traffic department Ashrafuzzaman said the bounty was announced for not only taxicab drivers but also all public transport workers if they can nab any criminals.

Asked about the police control room’s ignorance, he said the control room only extends primary support to the drivers. They don’t need to know about the bounty.

“The control room authorities will just contact local police station and high officials to send a police van to bring the detainees to the police,” he said.
