Update : 07 Apr 2013, 12:50 PM

Hefazat-e-Islam activists beat up five journalists including a female reporter of three private television channels during their mass rally on Saturday.

Members of the radical Islamic group assaulted Ekushey Tv journalist Nadia Sharmin near Purana Paltan crossing around 4:30pm.

Witnesses said some Hefazat men began to shout “we do not want any woman here, catch her,” when Nadia was on duty there.

The female reporter was also locked into an altercation with the long-march supporters.

Later, she was admitted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH).

Talking to the reporters at DMCH, Nadia said: “I was observing my duty at Paltan when some Hefazat men fell upon me, chanting slogan 'hold the atheist female reporter from Shahbagh.'"

“They chased after me and beat me up,” she said, adding that reporters from GTV and Diganta TV tried to save her, but the Hefazat activists did not spare them either.

Nadia’s camera crew Hanif also sustained injuries in the attack.

Earlier, SA TV reporter Mohsin Kabir and its camera crew Khorshed Alam were seriously assaulted by the Hefazat men around 2:30pm. They were admitted to DMCH.

The incident took place when they were interviewing some activists at the rally. The demonstrators also took away the video cameras of the journalists.

In the evening, Hefazat members attacked ATN Bangla cameraman Sohel Rana near Notre Dem College.

Sohel was hit in the head and leg. The activists left the place before police reached the spot. Police admitted the victim to Rajarbagh Police Lines Hospital.

Hefazat men also assaulted a Daily Ittefaq’s photographer in Paltan area in the afternoon.
