The Appellate Division of the Supreme Court has upheld a High Court order that stayed a government decision of suspending Gazipur City Corporation (GCC) Mayor MA Mannan.
A four-member bench of the Appellate Division led by Chief Justice Surendra Kumar Sinha passed the order dismissing a leave-to-appeal petition filed by the government.
There is no legal bar for MA Mannan to rejoin his office as the mayor following the SC order, Mannan’s lawyer Abu Hanif said.
The High Court on April 13 stayed a government order suspending GCC Mayor Mannan from his position.
The LGRD ministry on April 18 last year suspended Mannan for the second time after a Gazipur court accepted charge sheet against him in a criminal case.
The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) filed a case against MA Mannan for his alleged involvement into embezzling Tk49,01,848 lakh from a GCC fund.
The government had earlier suspended the Gazipur mayor on a similar ground.
