3 health benefits of caffeine

Update : 28 Mar 2016, 12:02 PM

Coffee has become such a staple for most of us, especially those among us who are workaholics, that it has become ingrained into our conscience to have a sip right after we wake up, right after meals, and maybe, for those of us slightly crazier than the rest, right before we go to sleep.    It's hard to admit, but let's face it: we can't do without coffee. Given how addictive – and indispensible – coffee is for so many of us, we often assume easily that it has harmful effects on our health. But the news isn't all bad. Coffee not only saves the day – it can have health benefits too. Here are some of them:

Coffee has protective effects on the liver, the organ which is prone to various kinds of diseases such as hepatitis, fatty liver disease and many more. These conditions, which are developed due to cirrhosis, the replacement of the liver by scar tissues, are prevented by coffee intake. Those who drink four or more cups of coffee everyday, have a 80% lower chance of getting these disease, studies have shown.

Coffee lowers risk of type 2 diabetes, which is a huge health problem that affects 300 million people worldwide. Studies have shown that people who drink more coffee run a 23-50% lower risk of getting this disease, which is characterised by elevated blood sugar level.

Coffee lowers the risk of stroke, despite popular belief that it increases blood pressure. While it does increase blood pressure to some extent, the effect is insignificant for most people. Studies have shown that coffee drinkers run a 20% lower risk of stroke.
