Chief Election Commissioner Kazi Rakibuddin Ahmad has said the first Union Parishad elections were held peacefully.
The CEC, however, expressed his regret regarding sporadic incidents of clashes and attacks that left one dead and several people injured during the polls.
He said: “Considering overall situation, the UP election ended peacefully. We have heard about some incidents but overall the election ended peacefully and in festive mood.”
He also informed that polling in 56 centres was suspended.
Kazi Rakibuddin also said stern action will be taken regarding the irregularities happened during the UP polls.
The commission will soon file case in this connection, he told the journalists.
He also informed that the EC will accept nomination papers through online in future.
"That's why the commission is now working on making corrections in the UP election rules and regulations," he added.
Voting in the first phase election at 712 Union Parishads was held on Tuesday amid sporadic clashes, violence and reported rigging.
Voting began around 8am and continued till 4pm without a break.
In the first phase of the elections, 36,456 candidates – 3,034 for chairman posts, 25,847 for member posts and 7,575 for reserved-seat women posts – are contending for the aforementioned positions.
A total of 54 chairmen, 179 members and 54 reserved-seat women members have already been elected uncontested.
