Hefazat-e-Islam, Bangladesh, yesterday demanded the rejection of the writ petition filed with the High Court challenging the legality of the constitutional provision that gives Islam the status of state religion.
Hefazat’s Secretary General Junaid Babunagari made the statement at a press briefing held in Chittagong Press Club in the morning.
He said: “Atheism will be established in the country if Islam is dropped as the state religion. Such step will hamper the sovereignty and peace in the country.”
Protesting the petition the organisation said it was a conspiracy to erase Islam as the state religion from the constitution.
Meanwhile the organisation declared countrywide protest procession and rally against the writ.
Babunagari said: “We have no objection if the court keeps Islam as the state religion but the country will become unrest if the verdict will go against majority’s demand”.
“A vested quarter in the government is trying to reach their evil goal through using court. The government should be alert”,said the Hefazat leader.
Hefazat’s Organising Secretary Mowlana Azizul Haque Islamabadi alleged that the 28-year old writ petition suddenly made functional while a number of important issues in the country were prevailing.
Hafazat’s senior Nayebee Ameer Allama Shah Muhibullah Babunagari, Joint Secretary Mowlana Mainuddin Ruhi, Assistant Treasurer Mowlana Illias Osmani, Mowlana Ishaq Osmani, Press Secretary Mowlana Munir Ahmed, Mowlana Lokman Hakim, Mowlana Yasin among others were present.
On February 29, the High Court fixed March 27 for hearing the writ petition filed by 15 distinguished citizens 28 years ago in 1988.
The High Court heard the petition for the first time in 2011 and issued a rule against the government.
