The newly appointed Bangladesh Bank Governor Fazle Kabir has said the reserve heist may have caused a loss of confidence among central bank officials.
“We will have to bring back confidence among the bank officials and alleviate the panic caused by the incident,” the governor said after joining his new position.
Kabir arrived at the central bank at 12pm yesterday for his first day of office. Earlier he went to the Sonali Bank headquarters and resigned from the chairman position.
He said that his first priority was to put the highest effort into recovering the $81m stolen from the account with the Federal Reserve Bank of New York.
“We will have to find out if there is any technical problem in our system and fix it so that such incidents do not happen again,” he said.
The next steps will be taken following the recommendations of the investigation committee formed under former governor Mohammed Farashuddin to probe the heist, he said.
The governor on his first day held a series of meetings with the deputy governors and executive directors to get an overview of central bank activities.
On March 15, Atiur Rahman resigned from his post as the governor in the wake of a $101 million theft from Bangladesh Bank’s reserve funds.
He served as the governor from 2009 and his tenure would have ended on August 2.
On February 4, hackers stole around $101 million from Bangladesh Bank’s account with the Federal Reserve Bank of New York.
