The Roads and Highways Department (RHD) will begin a drive to remove illegal structures from highways across the nation from today.
Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader said: “The drive will continue until the roads have been freed.”
The minister briefed reporters after visiting a mobile court at Gulistan in the capital yesterday.
He said: “We were given a month’s time to remove illegal structures from the highways. The duration of one month has finished on Tuesday. But large numbers of illegal infrastructures still remain on the highways. So, we will begin a nationwide eviction drive from tomorrow.
“We have already directed the Roads and Highways Department to run this eviction drive on highways all over the country, and also sent letters to the divisional commissioners to give them our support on the drive.”
Though the eviction drive starts nationwide from today, it will begin on the capital’s highways from next Monday.
“We have received a notice from the Road Transport and Highways Division to carry out an eviction drive on the highways, but we will start the drive from Monday,” said Omit Kumar, sub-assistant engineer of RHD in the Dhaka Zone.
