ACC sues Moosa over false wealth info

Update : 10 Mar 2016, 11:53 AM

Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has filed a case against businessman Moosa Bin Shamsher for allegedly providing false information on his wealth.

ACC Deputy Director Meer Joynul Abedin Shibli on Thursday afternoon filed the case with Ramna police station under the Anti Corruption Commission Act 2004, confirmed commission's Public Relation Official Pranab Kumer Bhattacharya.

Earlier on Thursday, the commission at its regular meeting approved a proposal to file a case against Moosa.

On January 28, the controversial business tycoon faced the Anti-Corruption Commission’s questioning for the second time and agreed to provide information on a Swiss Bank account in which $12bn of his wealth lies frozen.

ACC Commissioner M Sahabuddin Chuppu told reporters after the interrogation that Moosa had agreed to provide all information about his Swiss Bank account.

“The commission will take legal action against him if he does not cooperate or provide false information,” he said.

Moosa, after facing the interrogation, said $12bn was frozen in the Swiss Bank account because of irregular transaction.

The ACC earlier initiated inquiries against him in 2010 and 2011 following newspaper reports.

The ACC inquiry team came to know about the $7bn frozen money in Swiss Bank during his first interrogation on December 18, 2014.

Moosa claimed that he had earned the money legally while doing business abroad.

He claimed that the central banks of Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Egypt, Syria and Pakistan had deposited the amounts in his Swiss Bank account with regard to defence-related purchases.

Moosa, a pioneer of manpower export from Bangladesh, has drawn flak for purportedly being a prominent name in the international arms industry during the 1970s and 1980s.

On May 19, 2015, the commission issued a notice to Moosa’s manpower recruiting agency office DATCO to file his wealth statement by seven days.

Moosa, however, sought time until May 26 and finally filed the statement on June 7, 2015.
