A Supreme Court lawyer has sought ban on the publication or broadcasting of former Justice Shamsuddin Choudhury Manik's remarks on judiciary in the media.
SM Zulfiqure Ali, the lawyer, filed a writ petition with the High Court yesterday, seeking the ban.
On February 18, Zulfiqure wrote a letter to former Justice Manik, asking him to apologise before the nation for what he dubbed as “derogatory remarks against the chief justice and the judiciary.”
The write, filed by another apex court practitioner Ehsanur Rahman on behalf of Zulfiqure, sought the HC's directives on the information secretary to prevent media from airing the former justice's remarks on the judiciary.
Ehsanur said that the media have the constitutional right to enjoy freedom or expression and speech but with some restrictions, which have not been followed in case of news on Justice Manik's statements.
Apart from the secretary to the Information Ministry, the writ also made the chairmen of the Bangladesh Telecom Regulatory Commission (BTRC) and Bangladesh Press Council, and the director general of Bangladesh Television defendants.
