Update : 22 Feb 2016, 05:17 AM

Bangladesh-born engineer Sayeef Salahuddin has been named as recipient of the US Presidential Early Career Awards for Scientists and Engineers.

The award is the highest honour bestowed by the US government on science and engineering professionals in the early stages of their independent research careers.

A total of 105 researchers have been honored this year, says a White House press release.

“These early-career scientists are leading the way in our efforts to confront and understand challenges from climate change to our health and wellness,” Obama said.

“We congratulate these accomplished individuals and encourage them to continue to serve as an example of the incredible promise and ingenuity of the American people.”

Sayeef, an associate professor of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences at University of California, received his B.Sc. in Electrical and Electronic Engineering from BUET in 2003 and PhD in Electrical and Computer Engineering from Purdue University in 2007.

Established by US President Clinton in 1996, the awards are coordinated by the Office of Science and Technology Policy within the Executive Office of the President. Awardees are selected for their pursuit of innovative research at the frontiers of science and technology and their commitment to community service as demonstrated through scientific leadership, public education, or community outreach.
