Dhaka, London plan to have formal security framework

Update : 07 Feb 2016, 07:37 PM

Bangladesh and Britain are planning to have formal framework for security cooperation to make it more effective and qualitative.

“We cooperate with each other in different fields under several frameworks but both countries do not have such type framework for security cooperation,” said a senior government official.

Bangladesh has security cooperation framework with the United States, India, China, even with Australia, he said.

London is an important development partner of Dhaka and with security cooperation under a framework would make it more fruitful and qualitative, he said.

Another official said last week newly appointed British High Commissioner Alison Blake in her first call on with Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal said her country wanted to work with Bangladesh to combat terrorism and violent extremism.

When contacted with UK High Commission in Dhaka, it’s spokesperson said: “Terrorism represents a shared threat and requires a shared response. It is important for the UK to be able to work collaboratively with international partners such as Bangladesh to combat the threat from terrorism and violent extremism.”

Alison Blake in her first press conference in January said; “The UK and the government of Bangladesh also work together to tackle shared problems, ones that neither of us can solve on our own, including security problems and particularly extremism and terrorism.”

Bangladesh and the United States have formal security dialogue, which holds every year, where both the countries discussed about security cooperation.

Bangladesh Police recently signed a security cooperation instrument with Australian Police while Dhaka has formal arrangement on the area of security with New Delhi and Beijing.
