Petitioners move against stay order on Rabbi's complaint

Update : 26 Jan 2016, 12:13 PM

The plaintiffs have moved the chamber judge to overturn a stay on a High Court order directing authorities to accept Bangladesh Bank official Golam Rabbi’s complaint against Sub-Inspector Masud Sikder as FIR.

Lawyer AKM Ehsanur Rahman told the Dhaka Tribune on Tuesday that their petition would likely be heard on Wednesday.

On January 18, the HC ordered authorities to accept Rabbi’s complaint as FIR, after hearing a petition by lawyers Ehsanur and SM Zulfiqar Ali, broadcaster Zahid Hasan.

On January 21, Chamber Judge Justice Hasan Foez Siddique stayed the order until January 25 after the state moved against it.

The HC, in its order, observed that the detention and torture of Rabbi by SI Masud was a criminal offence and that the policeman should be sacked.

On January 9, Masud allegedly detained and tortured Rabbi before threatening to kill him unless the banker paid him Tk5 lakh. The Mohammadpur police station officer had also reportedly threatened to implicate Rabbi in false cases.

Later, SI Masud denied the charges.

Rabbi had filed a written complaint to police's Tejgaon division deputy commissioner. Masud was suspended after an investigation report was submitted to the deputy commissioner.

Masud claimed Rabbi was detained after he had failed to explain what he was doing in the area at the late hour.
