Sedition case filed against Khaleda

Update : 25 Jan 2016, 03:52 AM

A sedition case has been filed against BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia for her recent comment about the number of Liberation War martyrs.

Lawyer Momtaz Uddin Ahmed Mehedi filed the case with the court of Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Mohammad Rashed Talukdar on Monday morning.

The petitioner also sought arrest warrant against Khaleda Zia.

The court recorded deposition of the petitioner around 11am and would pass an order on it around 12 noon.

The case was filed after getting approval from the Home Ministry. On Sunday, the Home Ministry gave approval to file the case.

During a discussion on December 21 last year, Khaleda Zia said there were doubts about whether three million people really got killed during the 1971 Liberation War. She also alleged that Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman wanted to become the prime minister of undivided Pakistan rather than leading the nation to independence.

These comments sparked massive criticism. Two days later, lawyer Momtaz Uddin Ahmed Mehedi served a legal notice to the BNP chief, asking her to issue an “unconditional apology.”

Having not got any reply, last week Mehedi filed a plea with the Home Ministry seeking clearance to file a sedition case against Khaleda.
