'Cops won't be allowed in civilian dress on duty'

From now on policemen will not be allowed to carry out duty in civilian dress, Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal has said.

The minister made the statement while talking to journalists at his office on Monday afternoon.

"If they [policemen] are not found in uniform, their duties will not be considered as office duty. Policemen must at least wear police vests," said Kamal.

He also said suspended Mohammadpur Sub-Inspector Masud Sikder did not act like a police officer with the Bangladesh Bank official.

Sub-Inspector Masud confined Rabbi to a police vehicle and pressured him to give Tk5 lakh in bribe on the night of January 9.

He was suspended following the incident on January 16.

On January 15, four on-duty policemen have beaten up an inspector of the Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) in the Jatrabari area of the capital.
