SC upholds Nizami's death penalty

The Supreme Court has reinstated the war tribunal’s death sentence awarded to former minister and Jamaat-e-Islami Chief Motiur Rahman Nizami for committing crimes against humanity during the 1971 Liberation War.

A four-member bench headed by Chief Justice SK Sinha delivered the verdict on Wednesday morning.

AG satisfied with Nizami’s capital punishment

Attorney General Mahbubey Alam has expressed satisfaction with the capital punishment handed down to Jamaat-e-Islami’s Ameer Motiur Rahman Nizami.

In immediate reaction at the Supreme Court premises, the AG said: “The verdict has reflected people’s expectations. I feel satisfaction.”

Moncho demands Nizami's quick execution

The activists of Gonojagoron Moncho have demanded the immediate execution of the verdict against Jamaat-e-Islami chief Motiur Rahman Nizami.

Moncho spokesperson Imran H Sarker made the demand in an immediate reaction after the verdict of the Supreme Court on Wednesday morning.

North Korea announces hydrogen bomb test

An earthquake has been detected in North Korea, close to a site previously used for nuclear tests.

China, Japan and South Korea have all said there are indications the tremor was man-made, meaning the North may have carried out a new nuclear test.

North Korean state media has said a "special, significant" announcement will be made shortly.
