Bar lifted on holding polls in two municipalities

Update : 24 Dec 2015, 01:46 PM

The Supreme Court has stayed a High Court order that had stayed polls to Ranishankoil and Gafargaon municipalities of Thakurgaon and Mymensingh districts respectively.

Following the court order, there will be no legal bar to hold polls to these municipalities along with others on December 30, said Deputy Attorney General Ekramul Haque Tutul.

He said the High Court had stayed the elections to the two municipalities following two petitions over boundary disputes on December 9 and 22.

A voter of Gafargaon municipality had filed a writ petition with the High Court praying the polls to be stayed while mayor candidate from Awami League Iqbal Hossain Sumon moved against the HC order on the petition.

A counselor candidate filed the other writ to stay the Ranishankoil polls and the state moved against the HC order on it.

After hearing on the petitions, vacation Chamber Judge Mohammad Iman Ali on Thursday vacated the HC orders for six weeks.

The Election Commission will hold the polls to 236 municipalities on December 30.
