The High Court has directed the Bangladesh Energy Regulatory Commission (BERC) to explain legality of latest price hike of electricity and gas.
The bench of Justice Naima Haider and Justice Mostafa Zaman Islam passed the order on Monday after hearing a writ petition filed by Consumers Association of Bangladesh (CAB).
The bench also asked the commission why it would not be directed to reconsider its decision as CAB urged the government to consider the decision of price hikes of electricity and gas.
As the government did not pay heed to the urge, CAB lawyer Saiful Islam filed writ petition with the High Court on August 27 of this year.
On August 27, the prices of electricity and gas have been hiked by 2.93% and 26.29% for consumers respectively on an average effective from September 1.
