Alliance Française de Dhaka arranged a musical programme titled An Evening with Ghazal featuring renowned Ghazal singer Manzurul Islam Khan, yesterday at the Alliance Françoise de Dhaka, Dhanmondi.
Khan, who is a new celebrated classical singer in Bangladesh, has been singing since 1982. Beginning his singing career from Chhayanat, he completed an advanced course in classical music, Masters in Music, from Bombay University in India.
Khan received further taalim from Ustad Azad Rahman, Ustad Sanjib Dey, Aminul Haque, Ustad Amjad Rahman in Bangladesh and Ustad Usman Khan, Ustad Sanjoy Chawkbarty in India. He is even better known as an avid follower of Ghazal legend, Jagjit Singh.
Rendering a number of ghazals including some Bangla songs by Jagjit Singh, it was a delight for the audience who heard him play. The noted Indian musician Prodip Ghosh rightly conferred him the title of “Jagjit of Bangla.”
Khan has been performing his solos at some selected arenas of Bangladesh and India since 1994, enthralling and captivating the audience to the heights of spiritual yearnings and ecstasy. He aspires to continue singing as long as he can and contribute Bengali versions of ghazals, bringing in a shift in its gaayaki altogether.
