People urged to stand united to resist militancy

Update : 17 Nov 2015, 08:11 PM

A group of rights activists, educationists, journalists, freedom fighters and cultural personalities has called upon all citizens to be united and raise their voice against militant forces who are killing free thinkers in the country.

“If the people do not take a bold stance against militancy, the militants attacks will occur more around the country,” they said at a gathering on Dhaka University campus yesterday.

The speakers and others took part in a human chain in front of Raju Bhashkarja near the Teacher-Student Centre at the university yesterday morning, organised jointly by Sammilito Samajik Andolon and Bangladesh Rukhey Darao.

Speaking at the demonstration, Professor Emeritus Dr Anisuzzaman said: “We never thought we would have to fight again to establish the ideology of Liberation War, standing on the sovereign land of Bangladesh.”

He urged everyone to resist anti-liberation war forces so that they could not carry out any conspiracy against the country.

Journalist Abed Khan said the government should hang all the war criminals immediately as the people of the country are eagerly waiting to see the death penalties executed.

Professor Ajoy Roy, father of slain blogger Avijit Roy, alleged that the fundamentalists are killing free-thinkers in the name of Islam, although Islam does not ask followers to kill people to establish the religion.

Liberation War Museum trustee Dr Sarwar Ali said the militant groups are killing free-thinkers only to thwart ongoing war crimes trial in the country.

Cultural personality Ramendu Majumdar said militancy is a global threat now, which is why people from every walk of life should play a more vigilant role to defeat these evil forces.
