Facebook rejects Bangladesh govt requests for data

Social networking platform Facebook has rejected Bangladesh government's requests seeking information about its users.

The government made three requests to Facebook on three users between January and June in 2015, according to Facebook’s Global Government Requests Report. The report was published on Wednesday.

In its report, Facebook said: “We respond to valid requests relating to criminal cases. Each and every request we receive is checked for legal sufficiency and we reject or require greater specificity on requests that are overly broad or vague.”

In its report Facebook provided country-wise statistics of government requests and its responses.

According to Facebook, neighbouring country India made 5,115 requests seeking data on 6,268 users, and the company responded to 45.32% of the requests.

The United States has made the highest number of requests. It made 17, 577 requests on 26,579 users, in which the country got response to 79.85% of the requests.

"This report provides country-level information about content restrictions in places where our services are otherwise available. We have included instances in which we have removed content that governments have identified as illegal, as well as instances that may have been brought to our attention by non-government entities, such as NGOs, charities, and members of the Facebook community," the globally top-ranked social media platform said.
