40% quota for locals in primary schools

Update : 20 Oct 2015, 03:47 PM

Forty percent of the seats would be reserved for locals at both public and private schools in the country, said Education Ministry officials.

The declaration came after the concerned officials reached on a consensus over the proposal for reserving 40% seats for locals in government primary schools Tuesday.

Joint Secretary of the ministry Ruhi Rahman told the Dhaka Tribune that they would meet Wednesday to decide about private schools.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina recently ordered authorities to ensure admission of children to grade one in schools in their localities.

After a directive from the Prime Minister’s Office, the Directorate of Secondary and Higher Education (DSHE) proposed the Education Ministry to introduce area-based quota system for admission.

Rahman said: “We agreed to this decision but it will be finalised by holding meeting with government, concern officials to make it proceed.”

However, they are yet to decide on ways to identify locals, ministry officials said.

The joint secretary said they had agreed on an online admission system for grade one students from the next session in the districts.

At present, students are enrolled at schools through the online admission system in the metropolitan cities.
