Coal power projects urged to stay on schedule

Update : 16 Oct 2015, 07:13 PM

The Prime Minister’s Principal Secretary Abul Kalam Azad yesterday directed the Power Division to complete planned coal-based power projects on time.

Abul Kalam expressed dissatisfaction that visible progress had not been made at most projects, according to a Power Division official, who asked not to be named.

He was speaking at the “Coal-based Power Plant Project Implementation Progress Meeting” held at Bidyut Bhaban and chaired by State Minister for Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Nasrul Hamid yesterday.

“A road map should be prepared to implement the coal-based power plants properly. It should include sources of imported coal, steps to implement the environmental impact assessment and feasibility studies, steps to select the engineering, procurement and construction contractors and steps to complete the financial closing of the projects,” Abul Kalam was quoted as saying.

The government plans to set up 23 coal-fired power plants under private, commercial, joint venture and public initiatives to generate 20,865 MW of electricity by 2030.

Large and medium Independent Power Producer-operated power plants were also reviewed at the meeting.
