The ilish catching period has started anew yesterday following a 15-day ban enforced from September 25 by the directorate of fisheries.
The ban was applied aiming to boost ilish resources through ensuring safe spawning as well as proper breeding environment for the mother fishes, said Bimal Chandra Das, Barisal fisheries officer (ilish)
Bazlur Rashid, Barisal divisional officer and deputy director of fisheries department, claimed their move against netting, marketing, and transportation of ilish across his locality appeared success.
During the period, some 1,387 drives and 880 mobile courts were kept operational on 13,111 fish landing spots, wholesale, retail and kitchen markets to make the ban a success.
At least 848 cases were registered, 531 fishermen sentenced to different terms of imprisonment, Tk16.25 lakh realized as fine, 50.29 lakh meter nets worth Tk993.23 lakh and 10.9105 metric tons ilish seized in six districts of the division, he added.
Ajit Das Monu, president of Barisal fish wholesalers’ association, said the ilish trading had been vibrant after the start.
