Apart from usual security measures ahead of Eid-ul-Azha, the DMP is preparing to conduct raids in crime-prone areas and ensure evening banking services around cattle markets.
In a written order dated September 3, DMP Commissioner Asaduzzaman Mia directed all police officials to take necessary steps to ensure security ahead of the second biggest religious festival of Muslims.
Special attention would be given to securing areas surrounding the cattle markets, where large money transactions draw in opportunity-seeking criminals. The DMP chief also directed his officials to identify and take action against muggers, snatchers, pickpockets, and sedative gangs. He also sounded caution against recidivist police impersonators who become active ahead of Eid.
The DMP boss also ordered raids in crime-prone areas and creating a list of local criminals so it is easier to bring them to justice.
As part of other security measures, the DMP would set up close-circuit television cameras, police control rooms and watchtowers at all cattle markets as well as key points in the capital.
According to the order from Asaduzzaman Mia, 10 cattle markets would be set up in Dhaka South City Corporation, seven in Dhaka North and six others would be set up by the Dhaka district administration.
Meanwhile, the DMP has already held meetings with Bangladesh Bank authorities to ensure that commercial banks offer evening banking services at branches near the cattle markets. A decision has also been made to keep those banks open during the holidays so it is easier and safer for cattle traders to deposit their earnings.
With the help of cattle markets lessees, the DMP would also set up machines that detect fake currency in an attempt to thwart counterfeiters during the Eid rush. Measures would also be in place to prevent clashes surrounding the sale of cowhide.
DMP officials will also meet with transport and workers associations, cattle market lessees and shop owners to coordinate with them and brief them about their responsibilities during Eid.
The police would also hold meetings with garment factory owners to ensure that RMG workers are paid all their outstanding wages and bonuses before Eid.
