Bernicat: Form neutral EC for fair polls

She was speaking at a meeting with the Diplomatic Correspondents Association Bangladesh in Dhaka. Bernicat referred to the recent Awami League council, saying the prime minister said herself that she did not want questionable elections. New AL General Secretary Obaidul Quader, too, had made similar statement at the council. Bernicat said forming a new EC was a must to make the statements reality. The BNP and its allies sat out the last general election demanding a neutral caretaker government's supervision. BNP chief Khaleda Zia has criticised the EC numerous times for failing to organise fair elections. Bernicat said Washington hoped that the process of forming the new EC would be inclusive and transparent. “We want to see an independent, strong and non partisan election commission that will ensure that every one will cast vote and that every vote is counted,” the ambassador added.
