A Chittagong court yesterday granted fresh remands for three Supreme Court lawyers for their alleged connection with terror financing.
A case was filed against Barrister Shakila Farzana, advocate Md Hasanuzzaman Liton and Dhaka Judge Court advocate Mahfuz Chowdhury Bapon with the Hathazari police station in this regard.
Barrister Shakila, daughter of Syed Wahidul Alam, a former BNP whip from Chittagong, was placed on a 48-hour remand while the two others on a 72-hour remand each when they were produced before the court of Senior Judicial Magistrate Mosaddek Minhaz around 10am.
Chittagong District Court Inspector Anu Mong said the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB-7) produced three lawyers arrested on charge of financing Shahid Hamza Brigade before the court.
Chittagong District Court Public Prosecutor Abul Hashem said the remand was needed for the three to extract more information about the militant organisation.
On Sunday, the three gave their confessional statements under section 164 in an explosives case lodged with Banshkhali police station.
The lawyers under 164 confessed to have deposited money in a bank account linked to the Shahid Hamza Brigade but claimed they were only returning an advocacy fee they had taken in advance.
Advocate Abdus Sattar, counsel for defense, said RAB-7 previously took the arrestees on remand over the same issue and the arrestees gave their statements under 164 of the Criminal Procedure Code.
“There is no provision to place the arrestees on remand even after submitting confessional statement under section 164,” he said during the remand hearing.
Earlier, the three were picked up by RAB-7 from the capital city on the night of August 18 on charge of their involvement in financing the Shahid Hamza Brigade.
The RAB-7 said the outfit is modeled as like as Syria-based International militant outfit Mujahidin.
