Changes at BD mission of UN

Update : 20 Aug 2015, 04:03 PM

The government has decided to bring changes to the top level of the Bangladesh Mission at United Nations.

According to the plan, the current Permanent Representative AK Abdul Momen is expected to return to Dhaka after completing his tenure in October.

Momen, a brother of Finance Minister AMA Muhith and a political appointee, is the longest-serving Bangladesh permanent representative at the UN.

He joined the mission on August 26, 2009, replacing career diplomat and multilateral expert Ismat Jahan, and got an extension twice.

His tenure was supposed to end on August 25 this year, but it was extended this week by another 80 days, said a government official.

After the extension ends, he will come back to Bangladesh in October, he said.

“The UN General Assembly to be held in September will be his last assignment,” he added.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is expected to attend the UNGA, which is very important as it would endorse the Sustainable Development Goals, the future global development architect for the next 15 years.

It has been decided that the government will send a senior career diplomat as the next permanent representative, said another government official.

“The multilateral nature of work at the UN is very complex, and it is easier for a career diplomat to carry out responsibilities there,” he said.

A senior diplomat working at a very important mission in Asia has been selected primarily as the next Bangladesh PR to the UN, he added without elaborating.
