National Mourning Day observed across the country

People across the country yesterday observed the National Mourning Day and 40th martyrdom anniversary of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman with due solemnity.

In Rajshahi

Our correspondent reports: The day was observed with a fresh vow to materialize the dreams of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman to build a ‘Sonar Bangla’ and bring back the fugitive convicted killers of Bangabandhu to execute verdict of the murder case.

Various government and non-government organizations, political parties, socio-cultural organizations and educational institutions, including Rajshahi University and RUET chalked out elaborate programmes to observe the day.

The day’s programms began with hoisting of national flags and black flags, placing of wreaths at the portraits of Bangabandhu and four national leaders, offering special prayers and bringing out mourning processions.

In Chittagong

Marking the death anniversary of the founder of independent Bangladesh different socio-cultural organizations and political parties organised day long elaborate programmes in the city and elsewhere of the district, said our correspondent.

The authorities of Chittagong Metropolitan Police (CMP), Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) and district police had taken extra security measures to avert any untoward incident in observing the occasion.

The educational institutions, different socio-cultural and professional bodies in the district have chalked out detailed programmes to observe the day.

The Chittagong district administration brought out a mourning procession in the morning with the participation of people from all walks of life and placed wreaths at the portrait of Bangabandhu at Shilphakala Academy around 10am.

Exhibition of a documentary on the life of Bangabandhu was also held as well as special prayers at religious institutions, essay competition, poetry recitation and discussions.

Other organisations that arranged separate programmes were-the city units of Bangladesh Communist Party, Gono Forum, Chittagong Press Club and Chittagong Union of Journalists, Islamic Foundation, Shishu Academy, Press Information Department, Chittagong, Institution of Engineers, Chittagong centre, Civil Surgeon’s Office, Chittagong, Bangabandhu Parisad Chittagong, Sheikh Russel Smriti Parisad, Greater Chittagong Development Action Council, Projonmo 71 and Shaheed Smriti Pathagar, among others.

In Rangpur

Rangpur City Corporation (RCC) hoisted the national flag at half-mast at the City Bhaban at sunrise, placed floral wreaths at the portrait of Bangabandhu at Central Shaheed Minar and observed one-minute silence around 9:30am, reported our correspondent.

A milad mahfil was arranged and special prayers were offered for Bangabandhu and his family members.

Besides, the RCC authority  distributed foods among the poor and distressed people.

In Gaibandha

Our correspondent said a discussion, doa and milad mahfil took place for the past few days in observation of the day.

A discussion was held on the premises of Badiakhali High School under Sadar upazila, arranged by Awami League’s Badiakhali union unit.

In Khulna

A two-day programme to observe the National Mourning Day began in the city and district, chalked out by Khulna district administration, said our Khulna correspondent.

The programmes included poem recitation and art competition, which took place yesterday at Khulna Shishu Academy as well as a video show on the life of Bangabandhu.

An essay competition on Bangabandhu and Liberation War, and Bangabandhu and Bangladesh, began  among the school children at Khulna Zilla School.

National flags were hoisted at half mast in all government, semi-government, autonomous and private buildings in the city.

Besides, mourning processions, discussions, placing of wreaths at the portrait of Bangabandhu, screening of film show on life and works of Bangabandhu and special milad mahfils and prayers at all religious institutions had also been arranged.

Khulna district information office, Islamic Foundation, Khulna Betar, Khulna University, Khulna University of Engineering and Technology, Khulna Press Club and other institutions observed the day.

In Noakhali

Our correspondent reported that the day’s programmes started with  hoisting of the National Flag at half-mast and raising of black flags atop all public and private buildings.

Marking the day, the district Awami League and its wings and administration placed wreaths of flowers before the picture of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.

Later, they arranged a discussion at Shilpakala Auditorium where Badtre Munir Ferdous, Deputy Commissioner of Noakhali was on the chair while Law-maker Ekramul Karim Cshowdhury and also the secretary district Awami League attended as a chief guest.

According to our Barisal correspondent’s reports, District and city units of AL and its front organisations, different  political, socio-cultural, educational institutions, district administration and family members of the eight martyrs of August 15 black-night separately organised different types of programmes.

The programmes included discussion on life and achievements of Bangabondhu Sheikh Mujib, holding condolence rally, Quran Khawani, Hamd-Naat, Milad and DOA, feeding the poor, cultural function, voluntary blood donation, painting competition, poetry recitation, broadcasting lectures of Bangabandhu and songs of liberation war, placing wreaths at the portrait of Sheikh Mujib, Abdur Rob Serniabad and other victims of the August 15.

In Sylhet

Our correspondent said local administration had taken up elaborate programme to observe the the 40th martyrdom anniversary of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, in the district with due respect and befitting manner.

The day-long programme was adopted at a meeting in presence of leaders of Bangladesh Awami League and its front organizations, heads of educational institutions, representatives from socio-cultural organizations and journalists of print and electronic media.

Local administration organized the meeting and Deputy Commissioner (DC) M Joinal Abedin presided over it. The meeting was held at the conference room of the district.

Besides, district AL and its front organizations have also chalked out the elaborate programmes to observe the day, party sources said.

The day was also observed in many other districts including Madaripur, Shariatpur, Thakurgaon, Bhola , Meherpur, Chuadanga, Kurigram, Dinajpur, Lalmonirhat and Mymensingh.
