The Appellate Division of the Supreme Court has adjourned until August 9 hearing on a contempt ruling against the Daily Janakantha editor and its executive editor.
A four-member bench headed by Chief Justice SK Sinha passed the order yesterday rejecting a three-month time plea from the defendants, Janakantha Editor and Publisher Atiqullah Khan Masud and Executive Editor Swadesh Roy, who appeared before the court yesterday.
The court asked the two journalists to come up with an answer to the ruling on August 9.
On July 29, the apex court issued a contempt ruling against the newspaper for publishing an article questioning the role of the judges in war criminal Salauddin Quader Chowdhury’s trial.
The court yesterday also issued a show-cause notice to Soyeb Khan, an assistant attorney general, as he appeared on behalf of Janakantha. Attorney General Mahbubey Alam said he has told the court that an assistant attorney general cannot appear as an advocate on record in a contempt of court case.
