Update : 03 Aug 2015, 01:13 PM

The High Court has directed the government to take necessary steps to stop plying of all unfit motor vehicles across the country.

The court also ordered the authorities concerned to seize around 19 lakh fake driving licenses.

In a suo moto rule, the HC bench of Justice Quazi-Reza-Ul Haque and Justice Abu Taher Md Saifur Rahman also asked the government to find out and take legal action against the persons who are using the fake licenses.

The BRTA chairman has been asked to submit a report before it, complying with the order in 30 days.

It asked the authorities concerned to explain in four weeks the actions that have been taken so far against the unfit vehicles.

Communication secretary, home secretary, IGP and Bangladesh Road Transport Authority chairman have been made respondents to the rule and have been asked also to explain what they have done so far as they were already aware that a large number of vehicles are plying on the roads without valid driving licenses and causing accidents.

The HC came up with the order and rule following a report published in an English daily on August 2 with headline “Road accident: 90 lakh fake drivers rule the highway”.

The report said, as many as 191 people were killed in 154 road accidents in the country in a single week from July 15 to 21 as 19 lakh fake drivers are ruling the highways recklessly.
