German to provide 208 million euro as climate aid

Germany would provide 208 million euro as assistance to Bangladesh for combating adverse impacts of climate change, developing energy efficiency and strengthening the governance further.

Newly appointed German Ambassador to Bangladesh Dr Thomas Heinrich Prinz informed this when he paid a courtesy call on Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina at her office Wednesday morning.

PM's Press Secretary Ihsanul Karim briefed reporters after the meeting.

Prinz said that Germany would continue its partnership in the Bangladesh's development strides, saying that Bangladesh achieved tremendous success in socioeconomic uplift.

"Bangladesh is on the right track of development," he said.

Referring to Bangladesh's stunning progress in ICT sector, the German envoy expressed his high hope to bring some investment from his country in this sector.

He said that at present on an average 1500 students are getting German visa for higher study annually and this time, it might be increased.

Mentioning Bangladesh's potentials in biogas, Dr Prinz said 26% of the total energy consumption of his country comes from renewable energy.

"We want to increase it to 50%," he said.

Welcoming the new German ambassador in Bangladesh, the prime minister appreciated the sustained commitments of Germany to Bangladesh through development cooperation since its independence.

She said that Bangladesh is a very lucrative destination for investment and sought more investment in the country as it has a very liberal investment policy.

She recalled that Germany was one of the first European countries which recognised Bangladesh after its independence.

The prime minister also invited the German Chancellor Angela Merkel through the Ambassador to visit Bangladesh at her convenient time.
