The minister made the statement while addressing a surrender ceremony of three militants held at Shitol Auditorium Centre in Rangpur city as the chief guest.
Three members of the banned militant Islamic outfit Jama’atul Mujahedeen Bangladesh (JMB) surrendered to the law enforcers in presence of the home minister. The Rapid Action Battalion has organised the event presided over by Battalion Commander of RAB13 Commander ATM Atikullah.
The militants are Hafez Md Masud Rana, 18, son of Mondel Hossain of Loharban village, Hafizur Rahman, 16, son of Zillur Rahman of Binnyagari village and Md Akhteruzzaman alias Akhterul, 18, son of Sarwar Hossain of Joyrampur village, Dinajpur. The minister handed over a cheque of Tk5 lakh to each militant after their surrender.
The minister said a number of militants had already surrendered to law enforcement agencies realising their mistakes.
“The people of the country are now firm to stand against militancy,” he said urging Imams, teachers, students and common people to work together so that none could use Islam as a weapon of militancy.
State Minister for LGRD and Cooperatives Mashiur Rahman Ranga, Mayor of Rangpur Sarfuddin Ahmed Jhantu, Director General of RAB Benazir Ahmed, Divisional Commissioner Kazi Hasan Ahmed, DIG Khondker Golam Faruk and Rangpur Sector Commander of BGB Colonel Moazzem Hossain as special guests addressed the programme.
