The overall situation of violence throughout the country has been worse during the first half of 2015, compared to the first half of 2014, according to a report by Ain O Salish Kendra (ASK).
The prominent legal aid and human rights organisation published a statistical report of human rights violations during the period of January-June 2015 yesterday based on the incidents reported in the dailies.
The data in the report shows that all kinds of violence has been on the rise this year.
The ASK took into account incidents of border violence, political and hartal clashes, mob beating, death in jail custody, abduction by law enforcement, death by law enforcement, journalist harassment, violence against Hindu community and violence against women.
According to the report, the first six months of 2015 saw at least 23 deaths and 110 victims from border violence by Border Security Force of India. In 2014, the numbers were 14 and 99, respectively.
Meanwhile, political clashes and hartal violence collectively took 132 lives and left 3,892 peoples injured; the total number of reported incidents is 660. In 2014, the similar incidents killed 117 and injured 5,362.
The number of incidents of mob beating was 69 during January-June this year; last year, one more than last year.
There were 34 deaths in prison in the first half this year, compared to last year’s 28.
At least 161 incidents of journalists’ harassment have been reported this year; last year, the number was 133.
The number of death by law enforcement agencies – both in custody and crossfire – was 101 this year, compared to 85 last year.
Besides, there have been at least 326 cases of rape reported this year, compared to 309 last year.
Violence against women and minorities, especially the Hindu community, has increased as well, the ASK report said.
