Update : 16 Jun 2015, 09:22 AM

The Supreme Court has stayed until July 5 the tribunal’s verdict that fined Gonoshasthaya Kendra founder Zafrullah Chowdhury Tk5,000 for his statement on the punishment of Dhaka-based British journalist David Bergman.

Justice Hasan Foez Siddique, chamber judge of the Appellate Division, passed the order on Tuesday, responding to a petition filed by Zafrullah seeking a stay on the tribunal 2 verdict.

The chamber Judge also sent a petition to the full bench of the Appellate Division for its hearing.

On June 10, the tribunal found Zafrullah guilty of contempt of court and imprisoned him in the dock.

The International Crimes Tribunal 2 led by Justice Obaidul Hassan ordered to hold him in the dock under police vigilance for one hour and also fined Tk5,000. He will have to serve a month in prison in default.

Following the order, Zafrullah, a freedom fighter, said he would not pay the fine and would appeal with the higher court.

Later, Zafarullah Tuesday filed the petition with the SC seeking a stay on the fine.
