The heatwave sweeping the country since last week and making lives miserable will continue five or six more days, says the Met office.
The current spell of a moderate heatwave may continue as the monsoon wind is being delayed, said Sanaul Haq from the Bangladesh Meteorological Department. However, the central part of the country including Dhaka might experience some rainfall in a day or two which will reduce the temperature.
The maximum temperature in the country was recorded at 39.4 degrees Celsius in Jessore yesterday. On Sunday, Chuadanga experienced 38.4 degrees Celsius.
In Dhaka, the maximum temperature was 35.6 degrees Celsius yesterday; on Saturday the mercury hit 36.4C.
The Met office also said some parts of the country, especially Chittagong and Sylhet, are already feeling the monsoon wind which is causing some rainfall. However, at this time last year, there was more rain in these two regions.
In Bangladesh, monsoon usually starts on June 10 and lasts until mid-August, although the trend shifts every two to three alternative years.
The real feel is 3 to 4 degrees higher than the recorded temperature because of high humidity, the meteorologist said, adding that day and nighttime temperatures vary by about 6-8 degrees.
The Met office suggested avoiding direct sunbeams and using sunglasses, umbrella and caps outdoors. The searing heat has also triggered a surge in heat-related illnesses, prompting people to get admitted to hospitals.
Doctors suggest that people should drink plenty of fluid and remain cautious about taking food to prevent heat-related illness.
