Khokon: DCCs will also monitor construction sites

Update : 30 May 2015, 10:46 AM

Apart from the Rajdhani Unnayan Kartripakkha (Rajuk), the monitoring cell of Dhaka North and South City Corporations, would monitor the construction sites, said Dhaka South City Corporation Mayor Sayeed Khokon.

The mayor told the Dhaka Tribune Saturday while replying to a query what kind of measure will be taken on behalf of the city corporations to avoid land subsistence incident like NBL Twin Towers near Karwan Bazar.

While briefing media at the incident site at 2pm, Khokon said half of the Panathapath road  adjacent to the Basundhara City Shopping Mall, which was closed following the land subsistence, would be opened for vehicles on Sunday morning.

The mayor said he had already asked the owner of the under-construction building to remove all heavy equipments from the site.

Earlier, Sayeed Khokon set a deadline to the authorities for achieving significant progress in dealing with the situation.

“We will not spare Rajuk or any other authorities responsible, if the adjacent roads are not made safe and cleared for traffic by Sunday.”

[Bir Uttam] CR Dutta Road was closed on Wednesday as it suffered cracks immediately after the land subsidence. Traffic movement on the adjacent Panthapath was closed since the second land subsidence happened on Thursday night.

Additional Charge of Planning of RAJUK Md Abdur Rahman told the Dhaka Tribune that several officials of RAJUK involved in the construction site have already been suspended. He, however, did not mention details regarding the matter.

Prof Dr Fakhrul Amin, a teacher of civil engineering department of BUET, said north-west side of Hotel Sundarban building was risky.

"So, the north side of NBL Twin Towers should be filled with sands from east to west to avoid further land substance."

DSCC Chief Engineer Ansar Ali informed that some 4,000 truckload of sand has so far been dumped at the site.

A senior DMP traffic (south) official, seeking anonymity, earlier told the Dhaka Tribune that a political rally on Saturday put added pressure on the roads near the subsidence site.

If the situation was not solved by Sunday, a bypass route would be opened for vehicular movement in the area, he added.

The third land subsidence occurred at the Karwan Bazar construction site Friday morning, following two similar incidents on consecutive days since Wednesday.
