Four new national records were created on the second and final day of the AKM Shamsuzzoha Smriti 31st National Junior Athletics Championship held at the athletic turf at the Bangabandhu National Stadium yesterday.
BKSP continued their dominance in the event as they finished top with 22 gold, eight silver and two bronze medals. Three out of four new records were set by BKSP athletes. No other team managed to win more than two golds.
Saiful Islam Khan of BKSP broke the previous national record to bag the gold medal in the boys’ (age 18-19) 100m sprint. Saiful clocked 10.53s, beating the previous best of 10.85s. BKSP also dominated in the girls’ (age 18-19) 100m sprint with Tamanna Akter clinching first spot in 13.36s. Tamanna won a highest five gold medals in the two-day event.
Meanwhile, BKSP’s Sheikh Ashrafuzzaman finished first in the boys’ (age 17-19) 400m sprint alongside setting a new national record. Ashrafuzzaman took 50.72s to complete his run. The previous record was 51.34s. Ashrafuzzaman also set new records in the 200m sprint where he clocked 22.17s.
In the boys’ (age 18-19) javelin throw event, Mohammad Abdul Alam of Narayanganj won gold, setting a new national record by covering a distance of 54.12 meters.
