High Court order on DU sexual assaults on June 28

Update : 19 May 2015, 07:23 PM

The High Court yesterday directed the police chief to submit a progress report by June 28 on what steps police had taken against the sexual assaults on women and children on Dhaka University campus during the Pohela Boishakh celebrations on April 14.

The bench of Justice Quazi Reza-Ul Hoque and Justice Abu Taher Md Saifur Rahman will pass further order on the matter.

The court on April 16 issued a rule on its own volition asking the authorities concerned of the government and the DU to explain why they should not be directed to take appropriate legal steps against the perpetrators.

The office of the IGP, earlier in the day, placed a progress report through Deputy Attorney General Tapash Kumar Biswas before the bench. The report says the police formed two separate probe committees to examine whether there was any negligence by the on-duty officials during the incident. A case was filed with Shahbagh police and police are trying to arrest the offenders, the report adds.

During the hearing, Tapash told the court that police had already recognised eight persons and declared bounty of Tk1 lakh for information on each of them.

According to the reports, on April 14 some rowdy youths sexually assaulted around 20 women and children in the afternoon till evening at some points near the TSC area.

A probe body has already identified three police officials responsible for negligence in performing their duty properly, sources said.
