The High Court has asked the government to explain in four weeks as to why it should not be directed to form a permanent task force to address human rights violations committed by law enforcers.
In response to a writ petition, the bench of Justice Farah Mahbub and Justice Kazi Md Ejarul Haque Akanda also asked the government to explain why it should not be ordered to adopt a guideline or a policy to restore people’s confidence in the law enforcers.
Executive Director of Bangladesh National Women Lawyers Association (BNWLA) Salma Ali had filed the petition following the police action on demonstrators who were marching to lay siege to the DMP commissioner’s office on Minto Road on May 10.
They were protesting against police inaction to bring to book culprits who had sexually assaulted women and children during the Pohela Boishakh celebrations on Dhaka University campus on April 14.
The home secretary, inspector general of police, DMP commissioner, deputy commissioner of Dhaka and DMP deputy commissioners concerned were made respondents to the ruling, Deputy Attorney General Amatul Karim Swapna said.
