2,046 industries warned to operate ETPs or face legal action

Action aims to reduce pollution in four major rivers

Update : 24 Feb 2025, 09:43 PM

The Department of Environment has issued a final notice to 2,046 industries in Dhaka, Gazipur, Narayanganj, and Narsingdi as part of stringent measures to curb pollution in the Buriganga, Shitalakshya, Turag, and Balu rivers.

As per the Bangladesh Environment Conservation Act, 1995 (amended in 2010) and the Environment Conservation Rules, 2023, industries discharging liquid waste must operate Effluent Treatment Plants (ETP) and Sewage Treatment Plants (STP) (for sewage waste) continuously.

However, many factories either fail to install ETPs or bypass them, releasing untreated waste into the rivers.

Notices were issued between February 13 and February 22, instructing these industries to ensure the round-the-clock operation of ETPs and strict adherence to environmental laws.

Failure to comply will result in severe legal action.
