Update : 17 Apr 2024, 07:30 PM

Bangladesh is experiencing severe and mild heatwaves in different parts of the country.

As temperatures surge across Bangladesh, the risk of heat-related illnesses, including the potentially life-threatening heatstroke, escalates.

A heatwave is an extended period of hot weather relative to the expected conditions of the area at that time of year, which may be accompanied by high humidity.

Meteorologists say that almost every year in April, there are often two or three moderate heat waves and one or two strong heat waves in Bangladesh.

However, according to weather experts, this year's heat wave period is expected to exceed previous years.

With the looming threat of heat waves becoming more frequent and intense, it is crucial now more than ever to equip ourselves with the knowledge and strategies to stay safe and healthy during extreme heat conditions.

Ways to prevent heatstroke

The icddr,b cautioned that amid intense heat, children, the elderly, individuals with disabilities, labourers such as rickshaw pullers, farmers, and construction workers are especially vulnerable to heat stroke.

Furthermore, those who are overweight or have underlying health issues such as heart disease and high blood pressure are more vulnerable.

icddr,b suggests several ways to avoid heat stroke:

  • Stay inside and avoid going out throughout the day whenever possible.
  • When spending time outside, cover your head with umbrellas, hats, caps, or lightweight clothing.
  • Wear loose, light-colored cotton clothing.
  • Drink plenty of clean water.
  • Eat easily digestible foods and avoid consuming stale or open foods.
  • Avoid continuous physical activity during the day.
  • Take multiple showers or splash water on oneself to cool down.
  • Monitor the colour of urine; if it's dark yellow, increase water intake.
  • Ensure that the home environment is not overly hot or humid.
  • If feeling very unwell, seek medical advice promptly.

As mild to moderate heat waves sweep over various divisions and districts of Bangladesh, staying hydrated and cool becomes essential to beat the heat and stay healthy.
