Environment, Forest and Climate Change Minister Md Shahab Uddin has has urged every citizen of Bangladesh to take part in an essential initiative by planting at least one tree annually.
He made the remarks during the closing and prize distribution ceremony of the tree fair held at the forest department on Sunday.
He said: “If everyone participates in this endeavour, the nation could witness the planting of approximately 100 million trees annually. Moreover, the government actively contributes to this noble cause by planting around eight crore trees yearly.”
Responding to the call of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, the minister emphasizes the significance of planting more and more trees to create a healthier environment for both the present and future generations.
This year's National Tree Fair recorded a total sale of 29,02,6,14 saplings from June 5 to July 12, valued at Tk14,81,69,000. The figures represent the highest number of saplings sold and revenue generated compared to previous years.
Dhaka TribuneThe fair witnessed active participation, with 104 private nurseries, 8 government institutions, and 8 other institutions occupying stalls. This enthusiastic response showcased the nation's dedication to creating a green cover for a sustainable environment.
Apart from the successful National Tree Fair in the capital, similar events were organized in 7 divisional cities, 56 district cities, and 2 upazila headquarters. Encouraged by this achievement, the Minister appealed to forest officials to extend the initiative to all upazilas starting next year, promoting tree plantation and environmental conservation across the country.
With an ambitious target for 2030, forestry activities aim to increase forest land to 16% of the total land and expand the tree cover to 25% nationwide.
The closing ceremony was presided over by the Chief Conservator of the Forest Department, Md Amir Hossain Chowdhury.
The event commemorated the winners of the Prime Minister's National Award for Plantation 2021, as well as the victorious participants of the Essay and Painting Competition held during the National Tree Plantation Campaign and Tree Fair 2023. In recognition of their contributions, prizes were awarded to the stall owners of the tree fair.
