The deceased have been identified as Sopan (22), son of late Mostakur Rahman of Pashchim Dewbhog, and his friend Azhwad (22), son of Ripon from the same village. Both were second-year students of Electrical and Electronic Engineering (EEE) department at BRAC University.

Their friend Masud told journalists that a group of 15 friends traveled from Dhaka to Sopan’s ancestral home for a visit. In the afternoon, Sopan and Azhwad went to a local pond for a swim. Locals rushed to the scene and pulled the two students out of the pond in an unconscious state. They were later taken to a nearby hospital, where doctors declared them dead.

Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Sadar Police Station, Md. Mominul Islam, confirmed the incident. As the incident was an accident, the families of the deceased have requested that the bodies be handed over without autopsy, he added.
