Update : 05 Nov 2016, 07:27 PM
Nasirnagar police station officer-in-charge Md Abu Zafar, who joined on Friday, confirmed the matter to Dhaka Tribune on Saturday morning. He said: “We identified them from the videos shot during the attacks on Hindus and temples in Nasirnagar in past few days.” Nasirnagar police OC (investigation) Shawkat Hossain said they had moved the court seeking time to interrogate 15 of the detainees. “We hope information from the detainees will lead to the arrest of others involved in the attacks,” he added. When asked about security arrangement for the area, Shawkat said more than 5,000 members of the law enforcement agencies had been deployed in six risky unions of the upazila. A mob vandalised at least 10 temples and ransacked hundreds of houses belonging to the Hindus on Oct 30 over an alleged defamatory Facebook post by a Hindu youth. More than 100 people were injured in the attack which the victims blamed on local influential people. The ruling Awami League suspended three of its Nasirnagar unit leaders for their involvement. Police had previously identified and arrested 10 people over the incident. Amid the tension, unidentified criminals set ablaze six more Hindu houses in the upazila on Friday. OC Zafar said no complaint was over the latest arson attack. Brahmanbaria police’s Additional Superintendent Iqbal Hossain told the Dhaka Tribune that they had collected as many videos of the attack as possible. “We have identified around 50 people from the videos and will soon take action against them,” he added. Meanwhile, BGB spokesperson Mohosin Reza said two platoons of the border guards had been deployed at Nasirnagar to avert further violence.
