No chance of Siddiqur regaining his eyesight

Update : 08 Aug 2017, 04:08 PM
The prospects of Siddiqur regaining his eyesight remains bleak after he underwent yet another eye surgery at Shankara Netralaya in India's Chennai. Dr Lingam Gopal saw Siddiqur after a surgery there on Monday and observed that there is no chance of Siddiqur regaining his eyesight as 90% of the retina in his left eye had been damaged. This was confirmed by Siddikur's friend and classmate Sheikh Farid. He made a phone call to Siddiqur in the evening on Monday. Siddiqur had felt he was regaining some vision in the left eye last Saturday, but after the latest surgery on Monday, the doctor could not give him any hope, said Farid. Siddiqur was injured in a clash with police on July 21 when he took part in a demonstration with fellow students of seven Dhaka University-affiliated colleges.

He initially underwent eye surgery at the National Ophthalmology Institute and Hospital for the injury. Eye specialists there said he would be blind in both eyes, but it was later reported he had regained partial sight in one eye. Directed by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, the Health and Family Welfare Ministry later arranged his treatment at Chennai’s Sankara Nethralaya Hospital. Students from seven colleges affiliated with DU brought out a demonstration at Shahbagh on July 20, demanding the announcement of exam schedules. During the demonstration, Siddiqur's eye was exposed to a teargas shell. The Home Ministry has already formed a three-member committee to investigate the incident.  This article was first published on Bangla Tribune
