Abdus Sabur alias Raju alias Saad alias Samad alias Sujon was arrested from Tongi Railway Station area on Saturday night, DMP Deputy Commissioner Masudur Rahman told the Dhaka Tribune on Sunday.
“Raju also masterminded an attempt on Avijit’s publisher Ahmed Rashid Tutul's life,” he said. Tutul survived the attack.
Police arrested suspected militant Sumon on June 15 for attack on Tutul and suspected leader of Ansarullah Bangla Team (ABT) Moinul Hasan Shamim on August 23 in connection to Dipan murder.
Counter-terrorism unit chief Monirul Islam told the media that they arrested Raju based on information given by the two.
Moinul had told investigators that sacked army official Syed Ziaul Haque masterminded Dipan killing for publishing Avijit Roy.
Avijit was hacked to death on the Dhaka University campus in February last year while Dipan was killed in similar fashion at Dhaka's Aziz Supermarket on October 31.
“Raju has admitted to his involvement in the murder of Avijit and Dipan also the attack on Suddhaswar's Tutul,” Monirul said.
Both Dipan and Tutul published Avijit.
Monirul said Raju had given them important information on Avijit murder. “We are verifying them,” he added.
Former madrasa student Raju is an expert in Arabic and the use of machete. He not only motivated the sleeper cell but also trained them, the counter-terrorism unit chief said.
The Dhaka Metropolitan Police had placed a Tk2 lakh bounty on Raju, who is believed to be one of Ansarullah's top four military wing commanders, Monirul added.
