Ahmed Shahriar Reza Deep, described as a ‘friend-like younger brother’ of former air force officer M Tahsif Souri, has been sent to jail after completing his third round of remand in a murder case over Tahsif’s death.
On Saturday, investigation officer Inspector Firoz Uddin of the River Police’s Tongi Outpost produced Deep before the court after the completion of his 10-day remand and sought an order to keep him in jail.
In the remand report, the investigation officer said Deep had provided several important details about the incident during police interrogation. However, the information was being kept confidential pending verification in the interest of the investigation.
The report also described Deep as extremely cunning, saying he had tactfully avoided answering several questions and remained silent during interrogation.
It further stated that Tahsif, Deep and Jerika Tasnim Disha had been seen visiting various places and restaurants together before the incident.
An analysis of CCTV footage, mobile phone call records and other evidence collected so far indicated that Tahsif was last seen with Deep and Disha before his death, suggesting their possible involvement in the incident, the report said.
It added that Deep needed to remain in jail until the investigation was completed to ensure a proper probe, uncover the circumstances surrounding Tahsif’s death and identify and arrest those responsible.
Meanwhile, defence lawyers sought bail for Deep, while the prosecution opposed the plea.
After hearing both sides, Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Md Monirul Islam rejected the bail petition and ordered that Deep be sent to jail.
Saiful Islam, an assistant sub-inspector of the prosecution division, confirmed the matter.
Earlier, the court granted Deep four days of remand on October 31, followed by two successive three-day remand orders on November 3 and 5.
Tahsif went missing on the evening of October 27 after leaving home in response to a call from his junior friend Deep. His body was recovered from the Rajabari Ghat area of the Turag River by River Police the following afternoon.
In connection with his death, Tahsif’s father, KM Enayetul Karim, filed a murder case against unidentified individuals at Uttarkhan Police Station in Dhaka at 1:05am on October 30. Police later showed Deep arrested in the case as a suspect.
