All fairs, including the National Youth Fair, have been suspended at the old trade fair ground in Sher-e-Bangla Nagar following a decision by the Ministry of Housing and Public Works, State Minister for Youth and Sports Aminul Haque has said.
He made the announcement while responding to questions from journalists at a press conference at the Secretariat on Thursday, ahead of National Youth Day on November 1.
Asked about protests by Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University students over the venue for the National Youth Fair, Aminul said the suspension applied to all fairs scheduled at the venue.
“The Ministry of Housing and Public Works formally sent us a letter this morning (Thursday). In response to that letter, we have suspended the fairs,” he said.
Asked whether the National Youth Fair would be held, the state minister said it had been suspended for the time being.
“The national-level fair will not be held. However, fairs will take place in every district and upazila,” he added.
Aminul said the ministry had not cited any specific reason for the suspension, only informing the authorities that all fairs scheduled at the venue had been suspended for the time being.
He added that local fairs would be held across the country despite the suspension of the national-level event. Other scheduled activities, including those involving biogas plants and the Bangladesh-China Friendship Conference Centre, would proceed as planned.
