The International Court of Justice (ICJ) is expected to deliver its verdict in the case concerning the genocide against the Rohingya in Myanmar in October 2026, Gambia’s Attorney General and Minister of Justice Dawda A Jallow has said.
He conveyed the expected timeline during a meeting with Bangladesh’s State Minister for Foreign Affairs Humaiun Kobir on the sidelines of the 23rd OIC Extraordinary Council of Foreign Ministers meeting in Jeddah on Thursday.
He noted that the verdict on accountability for the atrocities committed against the Rohingyas would play a critical role in finding a sustainable solution to the Rohingya crisis.
The State Minister appreciated The Gambia’s leadership in pursuing accountability for the Rohingyas before the ICJ.
He stressed the importance of close cooperation between Bangladesh and The Gambia, particularly during Bangladesh’s FM’s Presidency of the UN General Assembly, to keep the Rohingya crisis high on the global agenda and advance efforts towards a comprehensive and sustainable solution, including the safe, dignified and voluntary return of the Rohingyas to Myanmar.
